Where We’re Going

Swallowfield

I’m sure this gem of a shop is already on your radar, but if by some chance you’ve missed it, take some time this month to check it out. Located at the start of Main Street in Northeast Harbor, Swallowfield is an instant mood boost. They have thoughtfully curated items that range from beauty and bath to high quality art supplies, notebooks, jewelry, witty greeting cards, and everything in between. A gray day in March is the best time to go do a little retail therapy and buy yourself something lovely. Swallowfield is the place!

What We’re Eating:

Gnocchi with Parmesan and Asparagus Tips

Gnocchi with Parmesan and asparagus tips. March is asparagus season, and who doesn’t love gnocchi. I love Mamma Emma’s pillowy gnocchi, it’s light and slightly chewy, perfect gnocchi texture. You can get it on Instacart.

This dish is very easy and unfussy.

Boil your salted water and cook your gnocchi. They are done when they rise to the top. While your water is boiling, slice your asparagus tips at the top, just topping the spears, then slice them in half vertically. (Save the rest of the asparagus for another time. If you place them in a drinking glass with water, they will live like flowers.) Sautee the asparagus lightly in olive oil until just barely fork tender. They will be a beautiful, vibrant green.

Assemble in a large pasta dish and toss the gnocchi and asparagus spears in olive oil and lots of Parmesan cheese. Finish with a final glug of olive oil and a healthy pinch of sea salt.

What We’re Drinking:

Tea

French tea Mariage Frères is a Salt Market favorite, it’s what we sell in store and serve. I’ve been traveling with a tin of loose leaf Pleine Lune Mariage Frères tea this winter, and a big-little joy of mine is sipping it around 3pm in a quiet corner somewhere. Pleine Lune is a black tea accented with almonds and spices, it's romantic and delicious. A perfect pick me up on a March afternoon.

What We’re Listening To:

The Salt Market’s Spring Is Just Around the Corner Playlist

This month's playlist is all about feel good indie soul. It’s filled with the kind of tunes that have us bopping our hands on our steering wheels, enjoying more daylight, and gearing up because Spring is just around the corner! Have a listen if you like beats from Khruangnin, CARRTOONS, or Orion Sun.

What We’re Buying

March is a wonderful month for nesting. I have been slowly, slowly adding to our home this winter. With style, budget, and thoughtfulness in mind, here are a few pieces that will brighten your home in the last of the winter months.

Duralex’s Picardie, set of 6 for $16.

I love serving wine in these. It reminds me of dinners at brasseries in Paris.

Shop them here.

Fazeek Striped Candles

One for $39. I love pink and red all year round.

Buy them here.

Antique baskets from eBay.

I use antique baskets to hold magazines, toilet paper rolls, a potted plant, and I like to place them somewhere up high like the top of a cabinet or shelf. They add charm and they’re so fun to shop for. Baskets range from $500 to $15, finding deals is part of the fun.

This woven willow basket from eBay has a beautiful metal handle.

Or this one

I want this Gemini Express Espresso maker!

I love the way it looks and how wonderful to be able to pull two shots of espresso at once at home!

$54 from MoMa.

At First Light

At First Light: Two Centuries of Maine Artists, Their Homes and Studios published by Rizzoli is a Maine classic coffee table book.

It belongs in the home of everyone who loves Maine.
