WHERE WE’RE GOING

54 Herrick

I was raised in Santa Barbara, California. Us Californians love acupuncture. “You feel sick? Go get some acupuncture and some Chinese herbs.”

When I moved to the Island full-time five years ago, I was so grateful to find Sarah Tewhey and 54 Herrick. Sarah is such a pro. She is a board-certified Licensed Acupuncturist, with a license for custom Chinese herbal formulation. I am lucky enough to have sessions with her a few times a month.

Every time I walk into 54 Herrick in Southwest Harbor I feel comfortable, safe, and calm. I have had painful acupuncture experiences in the past. With Sarah, I never feel anything other than like a newborn fawn when we’re done.

As autumn and the colder months approach, self-care and summer recovery are at the top of my list. If you’re looking for year-round wellness care on MDI, 54 Herrick–which is also home to two incredible bodywork masseuses, Courtney Vashro and Kirsten Richards–is your spot. I love everyone who works there very dearly.

WHAT WE’RE EATING

Warm Noodles

My wardrobe was made for this time of year (I love sweaters so much), and so was my palette. As The Salt Market season winds down and we close the brick and mortar portion of our business to focus on our online shop, I get back into cooking nourishing dinners for my little family.

One of my favorite dinners is “sexed up” ramen. Nissin Black Garlic and Pork is one of my favorites. The flavors are rich and full, very comforting. I like to add sauteed Beech Hill Farm Nero kale, steamed Triple Chick Farm broccolini or bok choy and green beans, sauteed mushrooms and garlic crispies. I add tofu, a soft boiled egg or simple sauteed chicken breast (depending on what's in the fridge), and a little dallop of Laoganma Spicy Chili Crisp. You can addaper thin scallion slices if you're feeling fancy. Voila! Nourishing, comforting fall dinner is served.

WHAT WE’RE DRINKING

Black Wine

Spooky season calls for black wine. And no, the wine isn't really black, it's just made with very luscious, dark grapes that make it look nearly black.

Sawyer’s Specialties has two beautiful black wines in stock. Manager Alexi recommends Isoro ($29), a Cannonau di Sardengna from Italy, and Kirke ($22), a Georgian Saperavi. It may be unconventional, but if I were you I would pair black garlic ramen with a glass of either of those bottles!

Both wines available at Sawyers Specialties.

🎶 WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO 🎶

Jazzy Jems

I made this playlist for day trips to the Midcoast in my little 1995 Land Rover.

Louis Prima, Peggy Lee, Julie London, all the jazzy jazz classics, as well as some deep cuts you may not have heard before. This is a lovely one if you’re a sucker for the romance of autumn, like me. When I listen to these songs I have romantic visions of apple picking, and my pup Saul running around in a plaid jacket.

WHAT WE’RE BUYING

A really good diffuser and really good essential oils.

My parents own and operate an olive oil and lavender ranch in Santa Ynez, California. We sell their beautiful olive oil and lavender essential oil at TSM.

During a visit in June, my mom recommended I buy a diffuser to pipe the lavender oil through the shop. I thought it was the best idea. First things first I had to find an aesthetically-pleasing and robust diffuser.

SERENA SAN MARCOS LAVENDER OIL AND LINEN SPRAY
($25 AND $18 FROM THE SALT MARKET)

I love Vitruvi’s design but I didn't want to spend $120 on their stone diffuser, so I went with their $52 option. It's beautiful, and it works so well. It even glows a warm light when it's on. It’s been one of my new favorite additions to the shop this year.

We have gotten so many comments about the lovely lavender scent in the shop. I also love using organic eucalyptus and organic bergamot oils at home. Highly recommend putting one in your bathroom. Diffusing amazing scents while you're in the shower is next level luxurious.

VITRUVI’S DIFFUSER IS CURRENTLY ON SALE
($52 ON VITRUVI)
